I’m a very, very lucky girl. As managing editor of Los Cabos Magazine, it’s my job to review five-star restaurants, try out luxurious new treatments at exclusive spas, and explore the Baja Peninsula through activities that range from sunset cruises to zip-lining and off-roading.
Whenever people find out what I do, they’re quick to ask for tips. Some want to know the best place for authentic Mexican (I’m partial to El Comal in San José). Others ask about hot nightclubs (Cabo Wabo, El S quid Roe, and Arre Mango are must-visits). And everybody wants the best deals.
We all know vacationing can be quite expensive. But, in Los Cabos, it doesn’t have to be. The trick is to do your research, starting with transportation. There are a number of great sites to follow online, but I particularly like TravelZoo and FareCompare. Both track airfare costs and produce helpful newsletters chockablock with tips. In fact, that is how I discovered the current México sale from Alaska Airlines. Through January 18, you can purchase tickets from Portland, Oregon, to Los Cabos for just $149 each way. Trips from L.A. start at $119.
Those same sites offer ideas for accommodations, but it sometimes comes down to luck on those deals. For a surefire way to save money, I suggest the Los Cabos Magazine’s Prepaid Voucher Program. By preordering these vouchers—which are used like gift cards—you can save 35 to 50 percent on everything from golfing to hotels, restaurants, activities like private charters or off-roading, and even dental care. Accommodations include a golf resort, private villas, boutique hotels, and more.
The restaurant list is even more impressive. Los Cabos is quickly building a reputation for its world-class dining options, and many of its very best eateries participate in the voucher program. The Italian ristorante DOC Wine Bar prepares exquisite handmade pasta dishes with premium, organic ingredients, while Nikki Beach is known for its specialty sushi rolls and sexy backdrop of bikini-clad beachgoers. The Sunset da Mona Lisa boasts an awe-inspiring view of the Cabo San Lucas sunset so romantic that more than a hundred couples get engaged there each year, and its menu is just as worthy. The cost-cutting opportunities don’t end there. Many resorts offer kitchenettes, perfect for preparing breakfast and dinner. If you need to limit the eating out, pick lunch. Restaurants often offer the same items at reduced prices midday. Find more tips in Sandra Berry’s dining article in Issue 20 of Los Cabos Magazine.
